2nd XI
Burridge 2s snatched the final promotion place in County Division 2 with a last-day win at Flamingos inspired by teenager Ben Lane. Opener Lane hit 93 and then came on towards the end of the home side's innings to spark a collapse, after they had been in a good position at 133-2 to chase down the Burridge total. His slow left-armers accounted for Steve Wright (57), who had been the backbone of the Flamingo innings, and Lane then proceeded to demolish the middle and lower order as he eventually finished for 5-24, his side's best bowling performance of the season. Lane had earlier led Burridge to 195-6 with a well crafted innings that included 12 fours. It was another illustration of Burridge's youth policy as 18-year-old Lane and his opening partner, 15-year-old Jamie Rood (36) put on 113 for the first wicket - Burridge's first century partnership of the season. That created the platform for a winning total although Burridge fell just short of the 200 milestone as Chris Mepham (17) and Cameron White (14) took the score on. The home side also made a solid start with opener Robbie Manthorpe (32) and Wright sharing a stand of 66. Flamingos looked well set until they were tied down by Martin Bundy (1-32 off ten overs) and veteran Rob Coles (1-47), who applied the pressure that enabled Lane to come on and grab wickets as Flamingos lost their way in the late run chase. With Pylewell Park losing at New Milton, the 21 points earned by Burridge were enough to fire them into third place by just 0.03 of a point, a great effort by a team that has prospered from the right blend of experience and youth led by committed skipper Clive Slaughter.
Burridge 2s kept alive their promotion hopes in County Division 2 by returning to winning ways with a comfortable win over struggling US Portsmouth 2s at Burridge. Cameron White (52) led the way for the home team after they lost three early wickets. He was well supported by Ben Lane (20) and Keith Piries (26) as Burridge amassed a respectable total without ever looking dominant. Once US batted they rarely looked like getting anywhere near the Burridge total. With a run rate of around two per over, they were never up with the clock and none of their batsmen were able to build the innings that would have threatened the Burridge score. Only Mick Rose (42 not out) provided any resistance but the game quickly lost its competitive edge and the main challenge for Burridge was to ensure maximum bowling points. They did so courtesy mainly of three wickets apiece for Piries and Ian Hardcastle who both conceded just 16 runs, ensuring that Burridge go into the final week of the season with an outside chance of securing a top three place.
Burridge 2s promotion hopes in County Division 2 were dealt a severe blow after they failed to capitalise on a good position in chasing East Tytherley's total of 218. After their reply suffered an early setback with the loss of opener Chris Mepham, his opening partner Neil Cunningham took the game to the opposition and was well supported by youngster Jamie Rood (21) as they repaired the early damage to put on 89 before Rood departed. Cunningham went on to make 94 with 15 fours at almost a run-a-ball before he was unfortunately run out. Even then Burridge were in a good position, needing less than 80 with six wickets in hand. They progressed to 179-5 but, not for the first time this season, the middle order and tail were unable to see Burridge home. Once Cameron White (23) and Clive Slaughter (17) had been dismissed the last five wickets went down for just 20 runs as the home side fell nine runs short. In reality, Burridge should have been chasing fewer than 218 with only the experienced Martin Bundy (4-42) and veteran Rob Coles (3-22) producing good spells in their ten overs. After an opening stand of 83 between Mike Braud (34) and Dan Babidge (46), East Tytherley slumped to 126-6 but Mike Peace's 48 helped them to a respectable total as Burridge failed to make their advantage count.
A poor batting performance left Burridge 2s well beaten after they were dismissed for their lowest score of the season at Old Basing. The home side, with their own outside aspirations of promotion from County Division 2, amassed a respectable but not unreachable score of 190-7 off their 45 overs with several batsmen getting established but failing to go on and make a big score. Richard Willcock (36), Neil Willcock (30) and Paul Eckersley (40) all made solid contributions with Nick Creal taking 3-53 to emerge as the pick of the Burridge bowlers. On a slow wicket, Burridge must have felt satisfied with their efforts in the field but they were never in the hunt when they replied. The loss of early wickets with only Chris Mepham (30) reaching double figures in the top order meant that they faced an uphill task almost immediately and were soon reduced to 39-5. Andy Booth hit an aggressive 28 but his departure ended any lingering hopes. 14-year-old James Sennett put together a gritty 24 not out on his debut but by then Burridge's cause was a lost one. However, Burridge's promotion hopes remain in their own hands and they must now win all their three remaining games and take a high level of points to ensure the step up.
Burridge 2s kept up their promotion chase in County League Division 2 after securing a comfortable seven-wicket win over top six rivals Lymington IIs. Fielding a weakened team because of first team calls and unavailability, Burridge made inroads early on into the Lymington top order after winning the toss and putting the home side into bat. None of the home batsmen were able to build an innings with Sully White (2-20) and Nick Creal (2-32) dislodging the top order. Only Neil Trestrail (24) provided much resistance as Lymington slipped to 85-5. The middle and lower order was then swept away by slow left-armer Marin Bundy. Having gone for 19 off his first two overs, he put the clamps on the Lymington batsmen, taking 5-32 off nearly ten overs with only colt Nick Elliott (21 no) getting Lymington over the 150 milestone. Burridge had plenty of time to secure the win points. Even the loss of top run scorer Chris Mepham (26) failed to disturb their progress as Ben Lane (50) anchored the side to a valuable win, aided by a stubborn 25 not out from Jez Wright.
Burridge 2's clash against table toppers Shrewton turned into a damp squib with the match abandoned at tea because of rain after the home side had been dismissed for an unconvincing 169. Put into bat with leaden skies overhead, Burridge built a reasonable score of 113-2 with opener Jamie Rood hitting a confident 55, including ten fours. The Burridge colt's third wicket stand of 67 with Keith Piries (27) seemed to provide Burridge with a springboard for a good score but wickets then began to tumble as off spinner Sam Gillett (5-28) demolished the middle order. Only a belligerent, run-a-ball 28 not out by Nick Creal ensured that Burridge had something to bowl out. However, a heavy shower that turned into a longer spell of rain put paid to third-placed Burridge's hopes of gaining any advantage over the league leaders, who were happy to see the game called off to ensure that their points average remained intact.
Burridge 2s gained a convincing win to maintain their place in the top three of County Division 2 after bowling out Hamble ASSC in just 27 overs at Burridge. Hamble made a blistering start with Ru Don hitting the first two balls for six and four. Their openers put on 41 before Sullivan White (3-33) made the breakthrough and once Don went for 27 it signalled a trail of wickets. Medium pacers Rob Sims and Glen Willoughby eased through the middle order with Sims making the most of his elevation from the thirds by grabbing wickets in successive balls as he finished with 3-14 off six overs, while Willoughby weighed in with 2-25. Burridge made short work of the target with Chris Mepham following his century the previous week by hitting 66 in 52 balls as the home side cantered home in just over 17 overs.
Chris Mepham's second century of the season fired Burridge 2s to a convincing win to maintain their top three spot in County Division 2. Opener Mepham hit 105 in 122 balls as Burridge set the pace from the start. Keith Peries (23) shared a stand of 54 for the first wicket and Mepham and Ben Lane (34) put on 92 as Burridge reached 146-2. Cammy White also chipped in with 24 as Burridge reached their highest score of the season. But it was Mepham who took the honours with three sixes and ten fours in his innings. Ropley got off to a steady start in reply with overseas player Marco Teixeira hitting 60 as they progressed to 95-2. Once he departed, wickets started falling regularly, however. Martin Peters (47 no) held up Burridge's victory charge but spinner Andy Booth polished off the tail to finish with 3-19.
Burridge 2s kept their promotion campaign on course with a narrow ten-run win over Hythe and Dibden at Jones Lane. Having posted 196-8 on an unpredictable wicket, Burridge could only breathe easily in the last over as Hythe's last wicket pair failed to secure the 18 runs needed for victory. Having been put into bat, Burridge struggled early on and again failed to get enough runs on the board before the drinks break in the 23rd over. The pressure on the middle order meant that Chris Mepham (27) and Ian Hardcastle (26) both went as they chased runs. Cammy White (45) was able to provide more of a backbone to the innings but there was no-one dominant enough among the batters to take the game away from the opposition. The result was that a score of less than 200 was always going to require some dogged defending, particularly with an outfield that often produced difficult bounces. Hythe were always in with a chance while Rob Frogget (53) was at the wicket but when he holed out to Nick Creal off the spin of Hardcastle (3-47) the challenge appeared to have faltered, as Hythe sunk to 136-7. That became 155-9 as Hardcastle and Martin Bundy picked up further wickets but a belligerent last wicket stand of 31 led by Jack Page (37 not out) gave Hythe a glimpse of hope before Bundy snapped up the final wicket. There were also two wickets apiece for Creal and Andy Booth.
Burridge 2s got back to winning ways in County Division 2 after a solid batting performance enabled them to win by four wickets with two overs to spare at Mays Bounty. At one stage, it looked as if the run chase would be a lot less demanding with Basingstoke struggling at 41-4. But a well crafted 90 by Ben Bissoon, ably supported by Jason Gregory (31) and late on by Jack French (33), pushed them over the 200 mark. Martin Bundy (4-24) went through the middle order but only Sully White (4-35) provided any real support. Burridge made a steady start with Nick Park (18) and Chris Mepham (54) putting on 55 for the first wicket. When they fell, Ben Lane took over the mantle with his first 50 of the season. At 128-4, Burridge still had plenty to do but a stand of 58 between Lane and Jamie Rood (18) took them close enough for skipper Clive Slaughter (16no) to complete the job.
Burridge 2s slid to their first home defeat in County League Division 2 in a game they should have won. Chasing a reasonable but comfortable total of just over 200 on a good batting track, Burridge paid the penalty for not keeping up with the run rate early on. Although openers Nick Park (26) and Ben Lane (43) built a solid foundation, the following batsmen found the pressure of getting the run rate back on course too much. Only Cameron White and Keith Peries, with even time scores of 47 and 19 respectively, were able to provide Burridge with any sight of victory but the tail crumbled as the pressure mounted. Burridge were also left to rue lapses in the field for the second week running. This week their ground fielding fell below par as the visitors, having made a good start through Tom Gates (89), steadily built their total. Nick Creal and Martin Bundy took three wickets each.
Burridge 2s slipped to their first County League Division 2 defeat of the season as missed catches cost them dearly at Ellingham. On a lightning fast outfield, Burridge needed to post a higher score than the 210-7 they achieved off their 45 overs. With too many batsmen failing to build on good openings, only Keith Peries, with a fine 66 not out, and Cameron White (36) mastered an unpredictable wicket. Ellingham owed much of their reply to Ash Barker who hammered an aggressive 120 with five sixes and 17 fours but Burridge will feel aggrieved that he was dropped five times before he was caught on the boundary.
With little support, Barker was the key wicket but by the time he departed the home side were just 20 runs from victory - enough for his team-mates to edge home by four wickets and maintain their own unbeaten start to the season.
Burridge 2s made it a hat-trick of wins to open their County League Division 2 season after an impressive bowling
performance secured a 44-run victory over Langley Manor at Burridge. Having mustered 175-8 off their 45 overs, Burridge were up against it when a blistering start by Langley saw their openers Renders (25) and Taylor (28) blitz 53 off the first six overs or so. But the introduction of medium-pacer Keith Piries changed the game as he mopped up both batsmen in his opening two overs before going on to take 4-33 off ten. The openers' departure signalled a collapse with Langley losing nine wickets for 35 runs as left-armer Martin Bundy applied the pressure at the other end, eventually finishing with 4-22. However, Burridge were made to wait for their win after a spirited last wicket stand of 43 by Jamie Palmer (23no) and Rob Peters (22).
Earlier, the Burridge innings got off to a steady but unspectacular start with openers Nick Park (45) and Ben Lane (17) putting on 80 for the first wicket. Like the Langley innings that followed, the home side also found it tough in the middle order and things were looking uncertain at 113-6 before a seventh wicket stand of 49 between skipper Clive Slaughter (37 no) and Glen Willoughby (19) enabled them to inch towards a respectable total.
Burridge 2s overcame difficult conditions to maintain their winning start to the season with a 28-run win over Hungerford in Berkshire. Put in on a damp wicket in blustery conditions, the visitors found runs difficult to come by in the early stages with last week's century maker Chris Mepham one of three wickets to fall with just 27 on the board. But Cameron White and Ian
Hardcastle started the rebuilding process before Hardcastle went for 28. White continued in the anchor role as wickets continued to fall steadily and his determined innings of 63 provided the foundations for the Burridge total which eventually edged past 150,Kevin Skeats taking 5-47. Tight bowling quickly put the pressure on Hungerford as they sought to maintain the run rate but, with Australian Mitch Watterston (53) at the wicket, they were always in with a shout. When he holed out
to catch in the deep by Ben Lane off Glenn Willoughby (3-34), Hungerford slipped to 88-5 and Burridge were able to seize the initiative. Hardcastle (4-23) grabbed a four-wicket haul for the second successive week and, despite some late resistance, the visitors ran out comfortable winners.
A superb 110 not out by Chris Mepham enabled Burridge 2s to get off to a winning start in County Division 2 with a comfortable 123 run victory over Purbrook 2s at Burridge. Mepham, who topped last season's Division 2 batting averages, dominated the Purbrook bowling throughout and hit his runs off just 116 balls. He received good support in mid-innings from Ian Hardcastle who returned to the club after a five-year absence to hit a belligerent 35, including three sixes. Skipper Clive Slaughter weighed in with a late 25 not out to leave Burridge just one run short of maximum batting points. Hardcastle then proved his value with the ball, taking 4-35 as wickets fell regularly in the visitors' reply. Once Andy Holder departed for 41, Purbrook were never in the hunt and were finished off by a typically economical performance of 3-10 off 10 by Martin Bundy. It was a promising opening by the 2s but sterner tests lie ahead, starting with next week's trip to Hungerford.
